Contraction of skeletal muscles in the body is controlled by the finely tuned network of cholinergic alpha-motorneurons. These movies show the 3D structures of skeletal muscle and the network of the motorneuron fibers, including neuromuscular junctions, in the mouse soleus muscle. Neuromuscular junctions are specific synapses between the motor neurons and muscle fibers, which are responsible for converting electrical impulses from the motor neuron into electrical activity of muscle fibers.
